$3.86 million for West Tigers Sporting Complex

Hardworking Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry has committed $3.86 million to deliver a Sporting Complex at West Leagues Club in Walkerston.

The construction of the Sporting Complex will include sporting fields, netball courts, cricket nets, lighting, security, a men’s shed, covered seating, unisex dressing rooms, canteen, and bar facilities.

Ms Landry said that the West Leagues Sporting Complex will be a gamechanger for Mackay, the Pioneer Valley and beyond.

“This new facility will provide a 1st class sporting facility for multi sports here in Walkerston for all of the community to enjoy,” Ms Landry said.

“Importantly, it will promote and increase participation in sports, through the provision of universally designed facilities.

“The project is expected to create 160 jobs during construction, 19 full-time club and 30 permanent part-time club positions.”

In 2019, Ms Landry was able to officially open a new lawns bowls facility at Wests Leagues Club after she secured $650k of federal funding.

“I am a strong supporter of West Leagues Club and would like to recognise the hard work of Kingsley and his staff for planning the facilities of the future,” Ms Landry said.

“Today’s announcement will provide further opportunities for future heroes and role models to be home grown from our region.”

General Manager of West Leagues Club Kingsley Theiber said today’s announcement is wonderful news for grassroots sports in our community.

“This funding commitment will ensure that individuals and families in our community have access to safe, modern facilities and will inspire people to lead a healthy and active lifestyle,” Mr Theiber said.

“This infrastructure will be integral in developing and supporting the champion athletes of tomorrow. In addition, it will create numerous jobs & opportunities in and around the club.

“Michelle is passionate about our community and has supported the club with numerous projects since 2013. On behalf of West Leagues Club, I would like to sincerely thank Michelle for her continued support of our community.”
