In the wake of Cyclone Koji’s devastating impact on Clermont, Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry MP has formally called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to commit both immediate recovery funding and long-term investment to rebuild and strengthen this vital regional hub.
Mrs Landry said the scale of destruction caused by Cyclone Koji presents not only an urgent recovery challenge, but a critical opportunity to rebuild stronger, more resilient regional communities.
“This is about helping Clermont and surrounding communities recover from a major natural disaster, but it’s also about investing in the future of regions that drive Australia’s economy,” Mrs Landry said.
“Recovery cannot stop at temporary fixes. This is a moment to address long-standing pressures and build infrastructure that makes regional communities stronger and more liveable.”
Mrs Landry said priorities must include addressing housing and accommodation shortages, repairing and upgrading major roads, and restoring and improving critical local assets.
Clermont Connect
One key opportunity is the Clermont Connect – Clermont Monash Lodge Revitalisation Initiative, which would deliver much-needed accommodation for senior residents seeking to downsize, while also easing broader housing pressures during recovery.
“This is a roll out ready project we have already discussed with Minister Rae, and it would deliver wide-reaching benefits for Clermont,” Mrs Landry said.
“It would support recovery efforts now, address long-term accommodation shortages, and make Clermont a more attractive place for families to live, work and invest.”
Communities across the region have been hit hard, with significant damage to homes, local infrastructure and agricultural operations. Stock losses are still being assessed, while widespread flooding has further constrained housing and accommodation availability across several towns.
The economic impact is also being felt across the mining sector, with mines north of Moranbah operating on shutdown or skeleton staff until at least the end of the month.
Early estimates place the cost of Cyclone Koji between $190 million and $600 million, with the full extent of the damage unlikely to be known until floodwaters fully recede.
