Sarina State School students experienced a slice of Canberra today when Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Milton Dick MP, joined Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, to deliver the Parliament in Schools and National Flag Roadshow programs.
The visit gave students the chance to learn about democracy, debate legislation and see an Australian flag that once flew above Parliament House, all without leaving their hometown.
Ms Landry said it was a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation.
“Being joined by the Speaker to deliver these programs is an honour,” Ms Landry said.
“It’s so important that children understand how our democracy works and interactive programs like Parliament in Schools make that learning exciting. The kids even debated one of the most pressing issues of our time; does pineapple belong on pizza?”
Students also got up close with the giant 22 kilogram Australian flag, the size of a double-decker bus, that once flew over Parliament House.
“Not only do they get to see it, they can touch it and learn about its significance without needing to travel to Canberra,” Ms Landry said.
“I’m proud to bring a piece of Parliament to the students of Capricornia.”
