Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, has launched a petition calling on the Labor Government to invest in more overtaking lanes between Rockhampton and Sarina.
Ms Landry said the state of the Bruce Highway between Rockhampton and Mackay has deteriorated under federal Labor, with congestion and a dire lack of overtaking lanes making the route increasingly dangerous.
“With winter traffic ramping up and thousands of tourists hitting the road, this 300 kilometre stretch is more dangerous and frustrating than ever,” Ms Landry said.
A damning report by Adjunct Professor Colin Dwyer released last year highlighted the severity of the problem, naming four zones on this section of the highway among the worst for fatal and serious injury crashes of the entire 1,679 kilometre Bruce Highway.
“Not only are there some of the worst sections of highway in the state but there are just two overtaking lanes per 100 kilometres between Etna Creek and Sarina. That’s simply not good enough.
“Earlier this year, both sides committed to a $7.2 billion Bruce Highway upgrade, but Senate Estimates revealed just $432 million will be delivered over three years, equating to a paltry $257,296 per kilometre. It’s nowhere near enough to make the highway safer or prevent further tragedy.”
Michelle Landry is urging locals and highway users to sign her petition to send a strong message to Canberra.
“This petition is about standing up for our community’s safety. Every signature shows the Labor Government that we won’t accept outdated and inappropriate infrastructure any longer,” stated Ms Landry.
