Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, is demanding an urgent Senate Inquiry into the Albanese Government’s reckless decision to allow the import of beef raised in Mexico and Canada via the United States.
“This is a dangerous and shortsighted decision that could cripple Australia’s cattle industry,” Ms Landry said.
“Diseases like Foot-and-Mouth, Mad Cow Disease and Bovine Tuberculosis aren’t just names on a list, they are devastating threats that could bring our beef sector to its knees.”
Central Queensland, the beating heart of cattle country, played a key role in exporting 1.34 million tonnes of beef last year, a 22% increase on the previous year.
Ms Landry warned that decades of hard work and world-class biosecurity could be undone by Labor’s careless politicking.
“This is more than just a trade decision, this is a national security issue,” Ms Landry said.
“It’s been 267 days since Donald Trump was elected and the Prime Minister still hasn’t met with him, yet somehow, he’s found time to quietly open the gates to beef from supply chains that include Mexico and Canada.”
Ms Landry joined calls from the Federal Coalition and industry leaders like Cattle Australia for a full, independent review of the biosecurity risk, and the science behind the Government’s decision.
“Capricornia’s cattle producers should never be sacrificed to Labor’s diplomatic games. We need answers. We need accountability. And we need them now.”
“The Senate must act. An Inquiry is the only way to get to the bottom of this biosecurity betrayal before it’s too late.”
