The Rocky Sports Stadium, a game-changing project for Rockhampton, is at risk of collapsing after being stalled by layers of state and local government red tape.
The Rocky Sports Club formally requested a minor deadline extension from June 2026 to September 2026 before the required cut-off on 31 December 2024. Yet, more than a month later, there is still no decision from the Department of Infrastructure.
Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry said the complexity of government red tape is placing community infrastructure projects at risk.
“The Rocky Sports Club has battled through a maze of approvals from the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Transport and Main Roads. These bureaucratic hurdles have placed undue pressure on the project, delaying construction through no fault of the Club. It’s another example of Labor’s incompetence and unnecessary delays blocking progress.
“This stadium is not just another project; it’s a vital piece of infrastructure that Rockhampton has been waiting for. It will create jobs, boost the local economy, and provide top-tier sporting and recreational facilities,” Ms Landry said.
Rocky Sports Club currently employs 70 locals, and this project will deliver even more employment opportunities and economic growth.
“Beyond jobs, the stadium will serve as a hub for sports, tourism, and community engagement. The $23 million investment isn’t just about bricks and mortar, it’s about building a stronger, more connected Rockhampton.
“The government must stop holding up progress and approve the extension immediately. The Rocky Sports Club has done everything right and I call on the Minister for Infrastructure to put an end to this red tape madness and tick off on the project.”
