Landry backs Rockhampton Airport Expansions with $20 Million Commitment

Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Senator Bridget McKenzie, today joined Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry MP, to announce a $20 million election commitment for Rockhampton Airport, securing vital infrastructure upgrades to support the region’s growing economy.

The funding will expand the airport’s tarmac footprint with the construction of a seventh bay (Bay 7), increasing capacity for larger aircraft and improving operational efficiency during major military exercises. Additionally, it will kickstart the development of a dedicated freight hub, unlocking new opportunities for Central Queensland’s agriculture and export industries.

Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Bridget McKenzie said the investment in Rockhampton Airport was an investment in jobs for the region.

“This infrastructure investment will help local businesses access national and international markets, strengthening the regional economy and securing Rockhampton as a key freight centre in Central Queensland,” Senator McKenzie said.

“Michelle Landry is a true local champion, and she recognises the importance investments like this to securing long-term well-paid local jobs in this vital community.”

Michelle Landry said the investment was a game-changer for the region.

“Rockhampton Airport is the beating heart of our region’s transport network, facilitating more than half a million passenger movements annually. It’s not just an airport, it’s a key economic driver,” Ms Landry said.

“This commitment will ensure Rockhampton Airport can handle increasing military traffic during Exercise Wallaby and Talisman Sabre, while also laying the groundwork for a freight hub that will connect our world-class beef and agricultural products to global markets faster and more efficiently.”

With the airport already supporting major airlines and accommodating widebody aircraft, the upgrades will enhance Rockhampton’s reputation as a regional aviation hub, creating local jobs and driving economic growth.

“Rockhampton Airport has the potential to be a major freight and transport hub, and I am committed to making that vision a reality.”

This investment builds on more than $44 million in federal funding for Rockhampton Airport over the past decade, which has delivered critical infrastructure upgrades and supported local employment. The new commitment will further solidify its role as a central gateway for Queensland’s agriculture, resources, and defence industries.

“Labor has ignored regional infrastructure for too long. The LNP is stepping up with real investment to secure Capricornia’s future,” Ms Landry said.
