Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, has called on the Premier of Queensland to actively listen to locals of the Eungella and Pioneer Valley region today as he finally fronts the community who are set to be decimated by his Party’s plans to flood their homes and farms for the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro scheme.
Ms Landry said she has been working alongside members of the community and their action group, Save Eungella, to fight back against the Labor Party’s absurd pumped hydro scheme.
“I’ve been working hard with members of the community to make their voices heard in this David and Goliath battle against Labor’s warped reckless renewable plan which is set to destroy their communities.
“In September 2022, the former Premier for Queensland labelled the Pioneer Burdekin Pumped Hydro Scheme the ‘jewel in the crown’ of their renewable energy plan. This announcement was made in Mackay, 81 kilometres away from the planned site. In fact, the then-Premier couldn’t even take the time to consult the community before making the announcement that many would be forced from their homes for the Pioneer Burdekin Pumped Hydro project. I find it appalling that the community had to hear about this from the six o’clock news.
“At long last, following 18 months of the community demanding to have their voices acknowledged and my persistent advocacy efforts, resulting in nearly 10,500 signatures on my petition, the Premier finds themselves compelled to confront the consequences this project will inflict on the residents of the Pioneer Valley and Eungella region.
“The Premier needs to listen and do the right thing by the community and the pristine environment and abort their plans for, in their words, the world’s largest pumped hydro scheme,” Ms Landry said.
