Landry Fights for Clermont Senior Living

Seniors in Clermont are being forced to leave their community due to the Albanese Government’s refusal to fund critical aged care infrastructure, despite the town’s desperate need for independent and low-care facilities.

Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, has slammed Labor for turning its back on the region after funding for a much-needed seniors living facility was rejected under the Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program.

“This is a disgrace. Clermont is a proud and vibrant community, yet seniors who have spent their lives here are being forced to uproot and move to Emerald or Mackay just to access appropriate care,” Ms Landry said.

“Labor claims aged care is a priority, yet it took them 13 months to reject this funding application, leaving seniors in limbo and families devastated.”

Ms Landry recently visited Clermont to meet with Belyando Enterprise Network Incorporated, Clermont Connect and Isaac Regional Council to discuss the growing crisis. With 25 per cent of Clermont’s population over the age of 60, and an undersupply of aged care allocations set to grow from 96 in 2021 to 187 by 2036, the lack of proper facilities is reaching breaking point.

“Clermont does have a high-care nursing home and some in-home care options, but there is no in-between. Without an independent living facility, seniors are being forced to leave their families, their friends, and the community they love. That is simply unacceptable.”

Ms Landry vowed to keep fighting for the funding Clermont desperately needs.

“I will not stand by while Labor abandons our seniors. This project is essential, and I will continue to fight to ensure the funding is delivered so seniors in Clermont can remain in their community, close to their loved ones, where they belong.”
