Regional sporting clubs are the heart of our communities, and ensuring they have the infrastructure to grow and thrive is crucial, especially in warmer climates where daytime training and games can be challenging.
Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, has committed $240,000 to install field lights at the Rockhampton Tigers Junior Rugby League fields in Rockhampton, ensuring the club and others who use the facility can train and play into the evening.
“This isn’t just about lighting up a field, it’s about lighting up opportunity for our kids, our athletes and our wider community,” Ms Landry said.
“In hot climates like ours, the ability to hold games and training sessions at night makes a real difference. It helps clubs grow, supports better participation and ensures players of all ages can enjoy the game safely and comfortably.”
The lighting upgrade will benefit a range of local users, including the CQ Capras Women’s team, Berserker State School’s Touch Football team and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School.
“The LNP understands how important local sporting and recreational facilities are to community wellbeing. I will always fight to ensure our regional clubs have access to the infrastructure they need to thrive,” Ms Landry said.
Rockhampton Tigers Junior Rugby League Club President, Steve Barron, welcomed the announcement.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Michelle for her ongoing support. These lights will make a huge difference, not only for our players but for all the other groups who use the fields. Being able to train under lights gives us greater flexibility and more opportunities to grow the game,” Mr Barron said.
