A future Coalition Government will fully restore vital road funding, slashed by Labor, to its original 80:20 model. Under Labor’s reckless cutbacks, the funding share was reduced to 50:50 model, delaying or axing critical road projects across the country.
Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, has been campaigning for the restoration of the 80:20 funding model and urgent upgrades to the dangerous Bruce Highway.
“I have passionately fought this battle in Canberra because one life lost on our roads is one too many. Labor’s audacity to slash funding that could save lives is nothing short of shocking. Their 50:50 model is a deliberate move to halt crucial road projects, knowing full well their Queensland Labor counterparts can’t afford to pay their share. This reckless decision puts lives at risk.
“Only a Coalition Government can deliver the full funding needed to repair our roads and save lives. We restored the 80:20 funding model when we were in government, and we firmly believe it’s the standard that must be reinstated to keep our roads safe,” Ms Landry said.
The Prime Minister has shied away from matching this commitment, stating that upkeep and construction of infrastructure was not a commonwealth responsibility.
“Queenslanders, particularly those living in regional and rural areas, are feed up to the back teeth with Labor’s excuses as to why they won’t make road safety a top priority.
“Just last week, AAMI’s Decade of Driving report confirmed what we in Rockhampton have long known; our region ranks as the worst for road crashes.
“Central Queenslanders deliver substantial revenue to the coffers of Treasury; however, they are driving on some of the most dangerous stretches of road in the country. This election will be an opportunity for voters to say they’ve had enough and want roads of the same quality their metropolitan counterparts take for granted each and every day,” Ms Landry said.
