NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING – HONOURING THE VICTIMS OF THE BONDI BEACH TERRORIST ATTACK

Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry MP, is preparing to mark the National Day of Mourning, 39 days after the horrific Bondi Beach terrorist attack, to honour the 15 lives lost as well as acknowledging to stand in solidarity with the families, survivors and first responders whose lives were forever changed.

“Today, Australians pause as one nation to remember those who were taken far too soon, and to acknowledge the profound grief carried by their loved ones and by Australia’s Jewish community,” Mrs Landry said.

“The National Day of Mourning recognises not only the immense loss we suffered, but also the extraordinary humanity, courage and compassion shown in the face of unimaginable darkness.”

Australians are invited to observe one minute of silence at 7:01pm AEDT tonight (6:01pm Queensland Time), marking the moment of the attack, to honour all those impacted.

Mrs Landry encouraged Australians to take part in simple but meaningful acts of remembrance and unity, including:

  • coming together to share a meal and spend time with family and friends of all faiths and backgrounds
  • leaving a candle on a doorstep or windowsill as a symbol of remembrance, mourning and solidarity with the Jewish community
  • undertaking one or more of the 15 suggested “Mitzvah for Bondi”, acts of kindness reflecting the lives lost

“The Coalition has stood with Australia’s Jewish community in the aftermath of the Bondi massacre and will continue to stand with them, particularly as our nation confronts an alarming rise in antisemitism,” Mrs Landry said.

“Today is not a day for politics. It is a day for reflection, unity and compassion. All Australians should stand together and stand with Australia’s Jewish community.”
