Over the weekend, Queenslanders voted overwhelmingly for change in the State Election. Whilst many seats are still being counted, the state is set for a fresh start under an LNP majority government.
Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, is pleased that Regional Queenslanders have voted to stop the controversial Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro project.
“Labor’s destructive plan to flood the Pioneer Valley will finally be stopped as the state Liberal-National Party has won an astounding victory.
“I have been fighting to save Eungella since 2022 when the project was first announced. Saturday’s election result sends a direct message to the Labor Party, that the majority of Queenslanders are against their reckless renewables-only policy.
“Whilst we in the LNP have been vocal about our opposition to the Pioneer-Burdekin scheme, the silence from the Greens political party has been deafening,” Ms Landry said.
One of the most vocal campaigners against the project has been LNP candidate for Mirani, Glen Kelly.
“The contest in Mirani is still ongoing, however the sitting member has seen a swing of over 8% to the LNP, a testament to Glen’s dedication to the region,” Ms Landry said.
Glen Kelly’s promise to make future Renewable Energy Projects impact assessable has been backed up by Premier-Elect David Crisafulli.
“We will not be embarking on the $24 billion wrecking ball that is the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Scheme,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“Central Queensland has had an historic sea of blue sweep in over the weekend. I would like to give a huge thank you to the dedicated volunteers who have given up their time across the electorates of Rockhampton, Keppel, Mirani and Burdekin.
Their efforts have ensured a stop to Labor’s excessive cost blowouts and reckless decision making,” Ms Landry said.
