The $155 million Rockhampton–Yeppoon Road upgrade is officially complete, delivering a major safety and infrastructure win for Central Queensland.
Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry said the opening marks the completion of a project she fought hard to secure, delivering $85 million in federal funding under the former Coalition Government’s Roads of Strategic Importance program.
“This is a huge win for our region. I was proud to deliver the funding to get this vital upgrade built because Rockhampton – Yeppoon Road is one of Central Queensland’s busiest and most dangerous corridors,” Ms Landry said.
Carrying up to 11,600 vehicles a day, including around 1,000 heavy vehicles, the road is critical to freight, forestry, defence, tourism and the daily commute of thousands travelling between Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast.
“Most importantly, this upgrade will save lives,” Ms Landry said.
“Too many serious crashes have occurred on this road, including the tragic death of a young girl at the Artillery Road intersection in 2019. That loss reinforced why safer roads matter and why I was determined to see this project delivered.”
Ms Landry said the new second carriageway, safer intersections and improved traffic flow will reduce congestion, improve efficiency and support the region’s long-term growth.
“This project is about protecting families, strengthening our economy and making sure Central Queensland has the infrastructure it needs now and into the future,” Ms Landry said.
“This is what delivering for our region looks like.”
