My First Speech Competition Now Open

Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, is delighted to announce the highly popular My First Speech competition is now open for submissions from students in years 10 to 12.

The national competition not only assists to raise awareness of Federal Parliament but is also an opportunity for young Australians to voice their opinion on a topic they feel is important to them.

Ms Landry, Federal Member for Capricornia, said she urges high schools across Capricornia to encourage their students to take part in the competition.

“The My First Speech competition tasks students to write and record a 90 second speech on a topic they are passionate about as if they are making their first speech in the House of Representatives.

“It’s important that we foster young Australians interest in politics and encourage the next generation to participate in political processes.

“Capricornia had its own winner of the My First Speech competition in 2014, with Chay Conaglen one of three winners for that year. His achievement highlights just how talented our youth are in Capricornia,” Ms Landry said.

A panel of judges, which include Members of the House of Representatives, will choose a winner from each year group.

Winners will be flown to Canberra to present their speech, as well as participate in program at Parliament House.

Submissions close at 5pm on Friday, 11 August 2023. More information can be found at aph.gov.au/myfirstspeech.
